What is ETFE film?

ETFE, known as Ethylene-Tetrafluoroethylene, is a thermoplastic and one of the strongest fluoroplastics available. It maintains the good heat resistance, chemical resistance and electrical insulation properties of PTFE, while radiation resistance and mechanical properties have been greatly improved. ETFE film is a thin film material made of ETFE as the main component. Because of its unique physical and chemical properties, ETFE film has been widely used in many fields such as construction, aerospace, sports venues and so on.

Feature of ETFE film

Electrical insulation performance: ETFE film is an excellent electrical insulation material. It has stable electrical insulation performance, which can effectively prevent current leakage and electromagnetic interference. This property makes it important in applications such as aerospace equipment where high insulation properties are required.

Heat and chemical resistance: ETFE film maintains the good heat and chemical resistance of PTFE. And it can remain stable in harsh chemical environments.

Radiation resistance: The radiation resistance of ETFE film has also been greatly improved. And it can resist radiation damage.

Self-cleaning performance: ETFE film has excellent self-cleaning performance, which can clean its own surface during rainfall to avoid the accumulation of pollutants.

Optical performance: The transmittance of ETFE film can be controlled in the range of 43% to 95%, and the ultraviolet light within 440 nm is impenetrable, which ensures the natural and soft lighting inside the building.

Heat conduction characteristics: The heat conduction performance of ETFE film is good. According to the geometric conditions and the number of layers of the film, its K value can be as high as 2.0W/m2K, and the thermal insulation performance is more than 3 times that of glass and metal roofing.

Application field

1. Electronic and electrical equipment field

ETFE films are also commonly used as insulation materials in electrical and electronic equipment. For example, in computer terminals, heavy power circuits, steel cables, fuselage cables, downhole logging cables, and control lines for fast transport vehicles and locomotives, ETFE films provide reliable insulation protection against current leakage and short circuits. Its excellent weather resistance and chemical resistance also allow ETFE films to maintain good insulation properties in these harsh environments.

2. Wire and cable field

In the wire and cable industry, ETFE film is often used as an insulating layer. Because ETFE has excellent electrical insulation properties, it can effectively prevent the direct passage of current, so as to protect the conductors inside the wire and cable from interference and damage from the external environment. At the same time, the heat resistance of ETFE film also makes it maintain good insulation effect in high temperature environment. In addition, the lightweight nature of ETFE film makes the overall weight of wire and cable reduced and ETFE film is easy to install and transport.

3. Construction field

Although the application of ETFE film in the construction field is mainly as a transparent roof and wall material. ETFE film can provide sufficient natural light and reduce energy consumption and its insulation properties are also reflected to a certain extent. The high light transmission and weather resistance of the ETFE membrane allows the building interior to maintain the appropriate temperature and light conditions, thus reducing the energy consumption of air conditioning and lighting systems. At the same time, the lightweight nature of ETFE film also makes the building structure more light and stable.
